Route notes

A cloudy morning gradually turned into a gloriously sunny afternoon with very good visibility, though the wind was quite strong and biting cold on high ground. Evidence of spring, albeit late, was everywhere. The highlight was crossing Ughill Moors, not a place I have visited on foot before, despite having spent several years of my childhood living at nearby Stannington.

Route summary

This walk follows the west bank of Agden Reservoir, meanders through Windy Bank Wood before climbing to Upper Thornseats.

It then descends to beautiful Bradfield Dale and follows the northern bank of Dale Dike Reservoir before climbing to Sugworth Edge. It follows Sugworth Edge past Boot's Folly and Sugworth Hall then climbs to Lodge Moor where panoramic views over Moscar Moor, Strines Moor and Bradfield Moor are well worth the climb.

The return to Low Bradfield is by way of Ughill Moors though this is made very easy by following the track known as Stake Hill Road. This return route offers stunning views across Bradfield Dale and beyond.

The route descends back into Bradfield Dale and follows a track through Brooms before following Blindside Lane as far as Annet Bridge. The route again turns off road as it follows the course of Dale Dike before returning to the beautiful village of Low Bradfield.

Route directions

Proceed left out of Low Bradfield car park along The Sands. Turn right at the junction with Hair House Lane. After 150m turn right along Windy Bank. Either stay on the road or at a point just after the dam wall take a footpath along the western bank of Agden Reservoir.

If following the road, after 1km take a track off to the right (1.25km, SK 25570 92660) and continue until a bridge over Emlin Dike (1.75km, SK 25033 92888). If following the footpath, the route is clearly defined though a little muddy after prolonged rainfall. The footpath eventually ascends to join a track (1.65km, SK 25090 92875), turn right and continue along the track until a bridge over Emlin Dike (1.75km, SK 25033 92888).

Cross the bridge and after 75m turn left along a clearly defined track through Windy Bank Wood. The path crosses a bridge over Emlin Dike and climbs steeply to exit at Windy Bank (a metalled road). Turn right along Windy Bank and head uphill in a westerly direction to a junction with Mortimer Road. Proceed 100m along Mortimer Road in a south-westerly direction. A gate on the left (2.65km, SK 24435 92603) allows access to a bridleway.

Follow the bridleway downhill until a gate allows access to Dale Road (3.25km, SK 24638 92043). Turn right along Dale Road, after 100m turn left along a forest track, where the track forks, keep to the right. This leads to a gate followed immediately by a second gate and access to the Yorkshire Water permissive path around Dale Dike Reservoir. Follow this clearly defined track, after 1.5km reaching a timber footbridge (5.25km, SK 23373 90645).

Cross the footbridge and turn left along a path for 100m until a wall stile on the right (5.40km, SK 23425 90588). Pass over the stile, turn towards the right and follow a path across a field in a south-westerly direction as it ascends Lee Bank, eventually reaching a boundary wall of Strines Reservoir (5.65km, SK 23348 90378).

At this point the path is more often a water course and the ground becomes increasingly boggy. Continue in a south-westerly direction picking a route through the marsh grass until reaching cultivated pasture (6km, SK 23143 90105). Ahead is the tower known as Boot's Folly.

Follow the edge of the pasture uphill in a southerly direction towards Sugworth Hall. Here a path leads through a kissing gate (6.45km, SK 23198 89685), immediately over a timber stile and through an archway of dense bushes. Continue through the thick undergrowth avoiding the clearly marked private access points to Sugworth Hall. Eventually the path emerges from the bushes and turns sharp right along a field boundary. Follow the path until it merges with a private road serving Sugworth Hall. Follow the private road uphill to the ornamental gates. Keep right of the gates and exit through a timber gate to Sugworth Road.

Turn right along Sugworth Road, after 200m, on the left pass over a stile (7km, SK 23183 89195) to a footpath alongside a dry stone wall. Head uphill over rough pasture in a south-easterly direction. Once again after a period of rainfall the ground can be marshy but a clear path can be seen. Pass through a field gate before reaching a wall stile to join a wide track (7.85km, SK 23480 88475).

Turn left along the track, after 125m pass through a gate, keeping left as the track forks. Continue along this track (Stake Hill Road) for 2.5km until it reaches Wet Shaw Lane, a metalled road (10.50km, SK 24023 91003). Turn right along Wet Shaw Lane, after 50m, on the left a stile leads to a footpath alongside a former plantation at Oaks Piece. Follow the path in a north-westerly direction crossing Hoar Stones Road. Continue across fields then drop down a gritstone edge to Blindside Lane. Cross Blindside Lane and continue steeply downhill to join a track (11.35km, SK 24023 91003).

Turn right along the track, pass over a stile and continue through Brooms in a north-easterly direction until its junction with Blindside Lane. Turn left along Blindside Lane and continue downhill until a point just before Annet Bridge (13km, SK 25493 91778). On the right find a wall stile leading to a footpath alongside Dale Dike. Follow this path over a series of wall stiles until it joins a track. Continue along the track until its junction with Mill Lee Road (13.85km, SK 26280 91645).

Turn left along Mill Lee Road, continue for 400m and return along The Sands to the car park. To visit the village of Low Bradfield, turn right over Smithy Bridge then left along The Sands. Return to the car park via the cricket pitch and footbridge near the tennis courts.
