Route summary

The Pyewipe Inn, situated at a point where the route passes under the busy A46 trunk road and joins the towpath of the Fossdyke canal, is a convenient place to take on refreshements and to idly sit and watch the boats go by.

From the Pyewipe Inn the route follows the towpath of the roman Fossdyke canal, the oldest man-made navigation in England, built by the Romans in AD120. From the towpath, just after the inn, are beautiful views of the city of Lincoln and its picturesque cathedral.

The route enters Lincoln at Brayford Pool, a stretch of open water in the heart of the city where the canal meets the river Witham, next to the campus of the University of Lincoln. Exercise some care in and around the Brayford since there is a small amount of local access traffic and many pedestrians.
