Details
Semur-en-Auxois is an historic town with picturesque cobbled streets, quaint houses and dominated by the Collégiale Notre-Dame church and the remains of its citadel.
The impressive remains of the towns fortress dominate the valley of the River Armançon which now meanders gently around the town, its once threatening power now tamed by the 19th century dam at Lac de Pont to the south of the town.
Perhaps the finest view of Semur-en-Auxois is gained by crossing the river at Pont Joly and viewing the town from its northern access. This provides a magnificent view of La Tour de l’Orle-d’Or with its huge fracture bestowing a sense of impending doom.
Semur-en-Auxois is a town to where one needs to wander to discover its hidden gems. One of these gems is Porte Guillier, a medieval gateway which leads to the ancient shopping centre and eventually to the gothic magnificence of the Collégiale Notre-Dame, Collegiate Church of Our Lady.
I have visited Semur-en Auxois several time and once again though the weather was very hot, clear blue skyes were not forthcoming and so from a photographers point of view impressive town this leaves me wanting to go back in order to try again.
