La Grande Forge de Buffon

We first came across La Grande Forge de Buffon during our stay in Avallon in 2005. We were visiting the Abbaye de Fontenay, the weather was gloriously hot and as we passed through Buffon, where the road follows alongside the Burgundy Canal, I was suitably intrigued.

On our return from Fontenay we stopped at Buffon, explored the village then sat by the canal and soaked up the atmosphere. Leaving Buffon I came across a sign for La Grande Forge de Buffon. We contemplated a visit but since it was getting late in the day decided we would probably be better returning another day.

I did not actually see the forge complex, only a directional sign so had no idea what to expect.

As we left I vowed to return to Buffon, the Burgundy Canal and La Grande Forge de Buffon.

Jump forward to 2010, and from our base at Venarey-les-Laumes we arrived at Buffon on bicycles by way of the Burgundy Canal towpath and finally got to visit La Grande Forge de Buffon.
