Picking melons, Sukhorechka

While Irina visited the dentist I arranged to go picking water melons with Robert and Lena.

We drove south out of Buzuluk, up the hill and past the cemetery until we reached the small village of Sukhorechka. Alongside the road are acres of cultivated fields. Due to the language barrier it was only later, when Irina could translate, that I fully understood the process.

Not everyone maintains a dacha on which to grow produce, instead they rent strips of land and grow their own crops, in this case water melons. The fields are divided into strips and wooden stakes mark each plot. A security guard is employed 24/7 to oversee the operation.

We collected a car boot full of melons, drove back to Buzuluk, where most were distributed to family and friends.

On a stifling hot summers evening eating freshly picked water melon is supreme.
