Description

"The town was laid siege ten times between 1127 and 1710. It was separated from the County of Flanders and attached to the County of Artois in 1196. Subsequently ruled by the Burgundians then by the Spanish.
The town was besieged in 1676 by Vauban[1] and retaken for France, although it remained a Spanish possession until the 14th April 1713, when, by the Treaty of Utrecht, it finally became a part of France." - Wikipedia

Aire-sur-la-Lys and the large town square or Grand'Place is dominated by the Town Hall. The Baillage is probably the most outstanding building and now houses the local Office du Tourisme.

Notes

After more heavy rain overnight we were feeling just a little damp and dispirited. Expecting the weather to improve we decided to spend our last full day in France exploring some nearby towns and villages. Our expectations of the weather proved fallible, the overcast conditions lasted all day.
