Details

Description

Avallon has some fine buildings, the most significant of which is the Church of St Lazare, dating from the 12th century together with the Tour de L'Horloge, an 11th century gateway structure through which passes 'la Grande Rue'. Avallon is the ideal location for visits to many other sites of historical interest.

Notes

After an uneventful move from the Loire Valley to Burgundy we decided to camp in the town of Avallon, in order to visit the Basilique Sainte Marie Madeleine at nearby Vézelay.

The local municipal campsite part of which is shaded by large conifers and close to le Cousin river proved to be the perfect place. The campsite is situated in a deep, forested valley a couple of kilometres south of Avallon along the road to Lormes. It is well signed from Avallon town centre. The amenities, given this is a municipal campsite, are first class.
