Details
The Château de Loches is a formidable building, originally a castle constructed in the 9th century, it is dominated by its massive keep, from the top of which, is a commanding view of the surrounding countryside. The climb to the top of the keep is well worth the effort though perhaps not for those who suffer vertigo. The various dungeons and implements of torture reflects one of the functions of the original building.
The nearby Collegiate Church of Saint-Ours is another historic building definitely worth a visit.
Thanks to the its fine architectural heritage, the most outstanding examples being the Château de Loches and Collegiate Church of Saint-Ours, and together with its street market, Loches must surely be one of the most picturesque towns in central France.
Quite by accident the day we chose to visit Loches coincided with market day. To my mind France is all about the superb markets with local seasonal produce and so much choice. The day was hot and sunny and we wandered around the market soaking up the atmosphere and the magnificent architecture.
As the market wound down we headed for the Château de Loches, a formidable building, originally a castle constructed in the 9th century. The climb to the top of the keep is well worth the effort though perhaps not for those who suffer vertigo.
